VRChat is an online virtual reality social platform that provides an unofficial community-maintained REST API for interacting with user accounts, avatars, and social features. The REST API base URL is https://api.vrchat.cloud/api/1 and requests require an 'auth' session cookie after initial login.

dlt is an open-source Python library that handles authentication, pagination, and schema evolution automatically. dlthub provides AI context files that enable code assistants to generate production-ready pipelines. Install with uv add "dlt[hub]" and start loading VRChat data in under 10 minutes.


What data can I load from VRChat?

How do I authenticate with the VRChat API?

Authentication is performed by obtaining an 'auth' cookie upon login (via the /auth/user endpoint with Basic Auth credentials), which must be included in subsequent requests to maintain the session. Basic Auth requires a base64-encoded string of the colon-joined, url-encoded username and password in the Authorization header.

1. Get your credentials

The VRChat API does not use a standalone "API Key" managed via a developer dashboard. Instead, it uses standard Basic Authentication combined with cookie-based session management. To authenticate: 1) Ensure you have a valid VRChat account. 2) If enabled, set up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) via your account profile settings. 3) Use your VRChat username and password to generate a base64-encoded string: base64(urlencode(username)

(password)). 4) Include this in your request header: 'Authorization: Basic <base64_string>'. 5) Upon a successful initial login, the server will return an 'auth' cookie, which must be stored and included in subsequent requests to maintain the session. Avoid frequent re-authentication to prevent rate-limiting.

2. Add them to .dlt/secrets.toml

How do I set up and run the pipeline?

Set up a virtual environment and install dlt:

1. Install the dlt AI harness:

3. Start LLM-assisted coding:

Use /find-source to load data from the VRChat API into DuckDB.

The rest-api-pipeline toolkit takes over from here — it reads relevant API documentation, presents you with options for which endpoints to load, and follows a structured workflow to scaffold, debug, and validate the pipeline step by step.

4. Run the pipeline:

If everything is configured correctly, you'll see output like this:

Inspect your pipeline and data:

This opens the Pipeline Dashboard where you can verify pipeline state, load metrics, schema (tables, columns, types), and query the loaded data directly.


Python pipeline example

This example loads /auth/user and /auth/logout from the VRChat API into DuckDB. It mirrors the endpoint and data selector configuration from the table above:

To add more endpoints, append entries from the resource table to the "resources" list using the same name, path, and data_selector pattern.


How do I query the loaded data?

Once the pipeline runs, dlt creates one table per resource. You can query with Python or SQL.

Python (pandas DataFrame):
