ExchangeRate-API is a service providing real-time and historical currency exchange rate data for global currencies. The REST API base URL is https://v6.exchangerate-api.com/v6 and requests can be authenticated via an API key embedded in the URL path or a Bearer token in the Authorization header.

dlt is an open-source Python library that handles authentication, pagination, and schema evolution automatically. dlthub provides AI context files that enable code assistants to generate production-ready pipelines. How do I authenticate with the ExchangeRate-API API?

Authentication can be performed either by embedding the API key directly into the URL path or by providing an Authorization header with the Bearer scheme. If using the header method, the Authorization header must be set to 'Bearer YOUR-API-KEY' and the key must be omitted from the URL path.

1. Get your credentials

To obtain your API key, navigate to the ExchangeRate-API website and sign up for an account. Once you have registered and confirmed your email address, log in to the official dashboard at app.exchangerate-api.com to view and manage your API key.

2. Add them to .dlt/secrets.toml

How do I set up and run the pipeline?

Set up a virtual environment and install dlt:

1. Install the dlt AI harness:

3. Start LLM-assisted coding:

Use /find-source to load data from the ExchangeRate-API API into DuckDB.

4. Run the pipeline:

Python pipeline example

This example loads latest and quota from the ExchangeRate-API API into DuckDB. It mirrors the endpoint and data selector configuration from the table above:

To add more endpoints, append entries from the resource table to the "resources" list using the same name, path, and data_selector pattern.


How do I query the loaded data?

Once the pipeline runs, dlt creates one table per resource. You can query with Python or SQL.

Python (pandas DataFrame):
