Load Reddit data to DuckDB

Build a Reddit to DuckDB pipeline with your coding agent. One prompt scaffolds it with the dltHub AI harness, plus the Reddit API base URL, auth, endpoints, and incremental loading.

SourceRedditDestinationDuckDBIn-process analytical database. The default local destination for dlt pipelines.

Reddit Data API provides programmatic access to Reddit content including subreddits, posts, comments, user profiles, and voting data. Everything needed to build a working Reddit → DuckDB pipeline is on this page: the API's base URL, authentication, endpoints, pagination and incremental field — plus a prompt that hands the whole job to your coding agent.

Build your Reddit to DuckDB pipeline

Paste this prompt into Claude, Codex, or Cursor. The agent does the rest.

Prompt
Run uvx dlthub-init@latest to build a pipeline from Reddit to DuckDB and run it on dltHub

That scaffolds a dltHub workspace and installs the dltHub AI harness — the project rules, the secrets-management skill, and the dlt MCP server your agent needs to work safely. From there it reads the Reddit API, proposes the endpoints to load, then writes, runs and validates the pipeline while you review rather than type. Credentials are inspected through MCP tools, so your agent never reads secrets.toml itself. How the LLM-native workflow works →

Prefer to write it yourself? Every fact the agent uses is below.

Reddit API at a glance

Base URLhttps://oauth.reddit.com
Example endpointGET r/{subreddit}/hot
Records found atdata.children
Authenticationall requests require an OAuth 2.0 bearer token and a unique User-Agent header — sent in the Authorization header, prefixed bearer
Also requiredUser-Agent
PaginationCursor-based via after, page size via limit (max 100). Pagination uses 'after' (forward) or 'before' (backward) as cursor parameters, which accept the fullname of an item. A 'count' parameter representing the total number of items already seen is used in conjunction with the cursor. 'limit' is used to set the number of items per page. The final page is indicated by 'after' being 'null'. 'limit' defaults to 25 and has a maximum of 100.
Incremental fieldafter
Record iddata.id
API referencehttps://github.com/reddit-archive/reddit/wiki/OAuth2

These values come from the Reddit API reference — the authoritative source if anything here looks out of date.

How do I authenticate with the Reddit API?

Reddit uses OAuth 2.0. All API requests must include an 'Authorization' header with a bearer token (format: 'bearer ') and a custom 'User-Agent' header to identify the application.

1. Get your credentials

  1. Log in to your Reddit account. 2. Navigate to the Reddit app preferences page at https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps. 3. Scroll to the bottom and click the 'create app' or 'create another app' button. 4. Enter a name for your application. 5. Select the 'script' app type. 6. Set the redirect URI to 'http://localhost:8080'. 7. Click 'create app'. 8. Your 'client ID' is the short string located directly under the app name; the 'client secret' is the string labeled 'secret' next to it. You will also need to construct a custom User-Agent string (e.g., 'platform:appname:version (by /u/username)') for your API requests.

2. Add them to .dlt/secrets.toml

[sources.reddit_source] client_id = "your_client_id_here" client_secret = "your_client_secret_here" user_agent = "platform:appname:version (by /u/username)" username = "your_reddit_username" password = "your_reddit_password"

dlt reads this file automatically at runtime. With the harness, the setup-secrets skill prompts you for the values and never handles the raw credential in chat. For production, see setting up credentials with dlt.

What Reddit data can I load into DuckDB?

These are the Reddit endpoints dlt can load into DuckDB:

ResourceEndpointMethodData selectorDescription
subreddit_posts_hot/r/{subreddit}/hotGETdata.childrenReturns a listing of hot posts from the subreddit
subreddit_posts_new/r/{subreddit}/newGETdata.childrenReturns a listing of new posts from the subreddit
subreddit_posts_rising/r/{subreddit}/risingGETdata.childrenReturns a listing of rising posts from the subreddit
subreddit_posts_top/r/{subreddit}/topGETdata.childrenReturns a listing of top-scoring posts from the subreddit
subreddit_posts_controversial/r/{subreddit}/controversialGETdata.childrenReturns a listing of controversial posts from the subreddit

How do I load only new Reddit records?

Reddit exposes after on r/{subreddit}/hot, so dlt can request only the records that changed since the last run. Set it as the cursor_path and dlt tracks the high-water mark for you between runs.

{"name": "subreddit_posts_hot", "endpoint": { "path": "r/{subreddit}/hot", "data_selector": "data.children", "incremental": {"cursor_path": "after", "initial_value": "2024-01-01T00:00:00Z"}, }}

On the first run dlt loads everything from initial_value; on every run after that it requests only what changed and appends with write_disposition="merge" if you set a primary key. See incremental loading.

What does the generated Reddit pipeline look like?

A standard dlt REST API pipeline — the same code you would write by hand, loading oauth and api from the Reddit API into DuckDB:

import dlt from dlt.sources.rest_api import RESTAPIConfig, rest_api_resources @dlt.source def reddit_source(access_token=dlt.secrets.value): config: RESTAPIConfig = { "client": { "base_url": "https://oauth.reddit.com", "auth": {"type": "bearer", "token": access_token}, }, "resources": [ {"name": "subreddit_posts_hot", "endpoint": {"path": "r/{subreddit}/hot", "data_selector": "data.children"}}, {"name": "subreddit_posts_new", "endpoint": {"path": "r/{subreddit}/new", "data_selector": "data.children"}} ], } yield from rest_api_resources(config) def load_reddit_to_duckdb() -> None: pipeline = dlt.pipeline( pipeline_name="reddit_pipeline", destination="duckdb", dataset_name="reddit_data", ) load_info = pipeline.run(reddit_source()) print(load_info) if __name__ == "__main__": load_reddit_to_duckdb()

Run it with python reddit_pipeline.py. The agent iterates on this until it loads cleanly — you review and approve, rather than write it from scratch.

How do I query Reddit data in DuckDB?

dlt creates one table per resource. Query the loaded data with Python or SQL — or ask your agent to, through the MCP server's execute_sql_query tool.

Python (pandas DataFrame):

import dlt data = dlt.pipeline("reddit_pipeline").dataset() df = data.subreddit_posts_hot.df() print(df.head())

SQL:

SELECT * FROM reddit_data.subreddit_posts_hot LIMIT 10;

See querying your data with dataset and exploring it in marimo notebooks.

How do I deploy the Reddit to DuckDB pipeline in production?

The pipeline runs locally, which is ideal for prototyping and one-off analysis. When you need it on a schedule, monitored on every load, and shared with your team, deploy the same dlt code on the dltHub platform — no infrastructure to maintain. The prompt above already ends with "run it on dltHub", so your agent can take it there directly.

  • Deploy & schedule — run the pipeline as a managed job with automatic retries.
  • Monitor — observable job queues, alerting, and load metrics for every run.
  • Transform — promote raw Reddit loads into governed, documented models.
  • Visualize & share — explore data in notebooks and publish live dashboards instead of static screenshots.

What other destinations can I load Reddit data to?

dlt loads into any of these — only the destination argument changes:

DestinationExample value
PostgreSQL"postgres"
BigQuery"bigquery"
Snowflake"snowflake"
Redshift"redshift"
Databricks"databricks"
Filesystem (S3, GCS, Azure)"filesystem"

Set dlt.pipeline(destination="snowflake") and add credentials in .dlt/secrets.toml. On the dltHub platform the same pipeline runs against a managed Iceberg lakehouse. See the full destinations list.
