Load HTML/CSS to Image data in Python using dltHub

What you’ll do

We’ll show you how to generate a readable and easily maintainable Python script that fetches data from html_css_to_image’s API and loads it into Iceberg, DataFrames, files, or a database of your choice. Here are some of the endpoints you can load:

  • Image Endpoints:

    • /v1/image/:image_id: Retrieve or manipulate a specific image using its unique identifier.
    • /v1/image/:template_id: Access or create an image based on a specific template.
    • /v1/image/abc123.jpg: Direct access to an image file in JPG format.
    • /v1/image/abc123.png: Direct access to an image file in PNG format.
    • /v1/image/abc123.webp: Direct access to an image file in WEBP format.
    • /v1/image/t-9f6526a7...: Access an image while providing additional query parameters for specific operations (e.g., debugging).
  • Template Endpoints:

    • /v1/template: Manage or retrieve available templates.
    • /v1/template/:template_id: Access or modify a specific template by its unique identifier.
  • Usage Endpoint:

    • /v1/usage: Retrieve information about usage statistics or limits related to the API.

  1. ⚙️ Set up dlt Workspace

    Install dlt with duckdb support:

    pip install "dlt[workspace]"

    Initialize a dlt pipeline with HTML/CSS to Image support.

    dlt init dlthub:html_css_to_image duckdb

    The init command will setup the necessary files and folders for the next step.

    To authenticate with the API, you need to use HTTP Basic authentication where your username is your User ID and your password is your API Key, both of which can be obtained from the dashboard at htmlcsstoimage.com/dashboard.

  4. 🏃‍♀️ Run the pipeline in the Python terminal in Cursor

  5. 📈 Debug your pipeline and data with the Pipeline Dashboard

    Now that you have a running pipeline, you need to make sure it’s correct, so you do not introduce silent failures like misconfigured pagination or incremental loading errors. By launching the dlt Workspace Pipeline Dashboard, you can see various information about the pipeline to enable you to test it. Here you can see:

    • Pipeline overview: State, load metrics
    • Data’s schema: tables, columns, types, hints
    • You can query the data itself

  6. 🐍 Build a Notebook with data explorations and reports

    With the pipeline and data partially validated, you can continue with custom data explorations and reports. To get started, paste the snippet below into a new marimo Notebook and ask your LLM to go from there. Jupyter Notebooks and regular Python scripts are supported as well.
