BILL is a cloud‑based financial operations platform that exposes REST APIs for AP, AR, payments, vendors, documents and related financial processes. What data can I load from BILL?

How do I authenticate with the BILL API?

For v2 endpoints, include devKey and sessionId as form‑encoded parameters; content‑type is application/x-www-form-urlencoded. For v3, POST to /v3/login with JSON body (username, password, organizationId, devKey) and use the returned sessionId in subsequent requests, typically as a header or parameter as required by each endpoint.

1. Get your credentials

  1. Sign up for a BILL developer/sandbox account via the BILL developer portal. 2) Obtain your Developer Key (devKey) from the portal. 3) Use POST /v3/login (JSON body with username, password, organizationId, devKey) to receive a sessionId. 4) Store devKey and sessionId for API calls.

2. Add them to .dlt/secrets.toml

How do I set up and run the pipeline?

Set up a virtual environment and install dlt:

1. Install the dlt AI Workbench:

dlt ai toolkit rest-api-pipeline install

This loads the skills and context about dlt the agent uses to build the pipeline iteratively, efficiently, and safely. The agent uses MCP tools to inspect credentials — it never needs to read your secrets.toml directly. Learn more →

3. Start LLM-assisted coding:

Use /find-source to load data from the BILL API into DuckDB.

The rest-api-pipeline toolkit takes over from here — it reads relevant API documentation, presents you with options for which endpoints to load, and follows a structured workflow to scaffold, debug, and validate the pipeline step by step.

4. Run the pipeline:

Inspect your pipeline and data:

This opens the Pipeline Dashboard where you can verify pipeline state, load metrics, schema (tables, columns, types), and query the loaded data directly.


Python pipeline example

This example loads bills and vendors from the BILL API into DuckDB. It mirrors the endpoint and data selector configuration from the table above:

To add more endpoints, append entries from the resource table to the "resources" list using the same name, path, and data_selector pattern.


How do I query the loaded data?

Once the pipeline runs, dlt creates one table per resource. You can query with Python or SQL.

Python (pandas DataFrame):

What destinations can I load BILL data to?

dlt supports loading into any of these destinations — only the destination parameter changes:

Troubleshooting

Authentication failures

If login returns no sessionId or an error, verify devKey, organizationId, username/password, and ensure you call the correct v3 gateway (/connect/v3/login). v3 responses return sessionId in JSON on success.

Rate limits

Bill.com rate limit: 18,000 API calls per developer key per hour. Exceeding the limit returns an error; implement retries with exponential backoff.

Pagination and response format

Many v2 Crud endpoints return a JSON envelope with fields response_status, response_message, and response_data. The array of records is typically in response_data. For v3, endpoint responses may vary; consult the specific resource documentation for the correct data selector.

Ensure that the API key is valid to avoid 401 Unauthorized errors. Also, verify endpoint paths and parameters to avoid 404 Not Found errors.
